Prader-Willi Syndrome is a rare and complex genetic disorder that affects development and growth. Some of the genes in chromosome 15 are inactive or missing. The Syndrome typically causes low muscle tone, short stature, incomplete sexual development, cognitive disabilities, problem behaviours and a chronic feeling of hunger that can lead to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity.
As the Shadow Minister for Health, my priority is to ensure the Government is providing the Health Services that Victorians need and deserve. It’s very pleasing that the Federal Health Minister, The Hon Greg Hunt announced in January this year, $25 million in funding to enhance Australia’s drug discovery capabilities at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute’s new Drug Discovery Centre. These types of investments into research will help find a cure into conditions such as PWS.
