$1.4 Million Housing Redevelopment in St Kilda (31.10.2012)

Written on the 31 October 2012

Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell today joined Member for Southern Metropolitan Region Georgie Crozier, to officially open a newly refurbished housing project in St Kilda.

The former rooming house in Grey Street is owned by the Victorian Government, managed by St Kilda Community Housing, and now provides quality housing for low income earners.

“This redevelopment, which has been a great a partnership between the Victorian Government and St Kilda Community Housing, has seen the conversion of the existing rooms to provide 19 self-contained units with their own kitchenette and ensuite,” Ms Lovell said.

“The apartments will be used to house people who are currently living in „shared facilities‟ rooming houses in the area, and tenants have already started to move in.”

Redevelopment work on this Government-owned property started in June 2011 and was completed this month, at a total cost to St Kilda Community Housing of $1.45 million.

Works included significant repairs to the building both inside and out, including the installation of fire detection systems, security, heating and the replacement of the roof.

St Kilda Community Housing, which manages the building, is a not-for-profit housing agency which currently manages 14 government-owned properties with 248 tenancies.

Ms Crozier said the development would help locals stay within their own community.

“Community connections are important, and I‟m sure the new tenants will be thrilled to stay in St Kilda,” Ms Crozier said.

“The new self contained units will also give a wonderful feel of „home‟ and independence to people who have previously been in a shared, rooming house situation – something that can only be positive for them.”
