Clean Up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day

Every year tonnes of rubbish are removed from our local parks and gardens by friends and neighbours in an effort to 'Clean Up Australia' and protect their local environments.

This year I joined the Mayor of Stonnington, Matthew Koce and members of the Prahran community for Clean Up Australia Day activities at Darling Park, South Yarra. I also headed out to Brickmakers Park and Scotchmans Creek with the Oakleigh community to do my bit to clean up and keep Victoria beautiful.

The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to reducing the amount of litter that ends up in rivers and streams, particularly in metropolitan areas.

Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, has created a government taskforce to tackle this issue.

With representatives from EPA, Melbourne Water, DSE, Parks Victoria and the broader community, the taskforce will develop a plan to:

  • Manage the threats to water quality, including pollution, litter, stormwater inputs and more;
  • Support Victorians to take actions that care for and protect our iconic river and bays, including litter prevention and clean up;
  • Provide better, more timely and easier to access information to Victorians about water quality in the Yarra and bay
  • Tighten the response and management arrangements for all Government agencies that have a hand in environmental management of our bay and rivers.
