Improving safety in and around public housing in Albert Park (16.11.2018)

Daniel Andrews has lost control of crime and only the Liberal Nationals will crack down on crime to ensure drug dealers, shoplifters and those who commit violence, feel the full force of the law.

That's why a Liberal Nationals Government will get back in control of community safety by providing $1.5 million to extend the CCTV network, improve safety lighting and make other security infrastructure improvements at and around the Albert Park public housing estates.

Since Daniel Andrews was elected, crime in Albert Park has increased overall by 15.3% and serious assault has increased by 50%. Further to this, there has been a 137.5% increase in drug possession.

CCTV programs have been widely successful in improving residents' feelings of safety and security as well as assisting Victoria Police in responding to crime.

We will work with the Council, Victoria Police and public housing tenants and housing providers towards identifying specific projects and locations.

This announcement follows other community focused crime prevention measures announced by the Liberal Nationals including:

  •          Establishing highly visible Police shopfronts in 12 major shopping centres, including at Chadstone;
  •          Re-establish a 'Police in Schools' program, to allow police to better engage with young Victorians;
  •          Fund the establishment of a Victoria Police Mobile CCTV camera rollout;
  •          Commit $2 million over four years to Neighbourhood Watch for local crime prevention initiatives and;
  •          Fund the phased roll-out of 4,000 Tasers to metropolitan 24-hour police stations, including St Kilda

The Liberal Nationals will also work with the St Kilda community to establish a St Kilda Neighbourhood Safety Plan: a partnership to identify neighbourhood safety problems and practical solutions, well before crime escalates out of control.

Under Daniel Andrews, crime is out of control and only the Liberal Nationals are committed to ensuring all Victorians feel safe in their communities.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Housing, Georgie Crozier:

"The Liberal Nationals are committed to stamping out anti-social behaviour in and around public housing.

"Crime is out of control under Daniel Andrews and vulnerable communities in Albert Park are paying the price."

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Edward O'Donohue:

"A Matthew Guy Government will get back in control of community safety and make Victoria safe again.

"Daniel Andrews has lost control of law and order, including in public housing. Everyone has a right to feel safe in their own home."

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Albert Park, Andrew Bond:

"Tenants at Park Towers and Emerald Hill Court have been asking Martin Foley for additional security for years, but he hasn't delivered.

"Martin Foley has ignored the pleas of many public housing tenants who want to feel safe in their own homes.

"Martin Foley has been doorknocking public housing estates because he wants their votes it's too bad he didn't show the same interest in the security issues that tenants have been raising for years."
