Innovative Social Housing Project for Port Melbourne (08.08.2012)

An innovative housing project is delivering social housing with a difference in Port Melbourne, Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell announced today.


Ms Lovell and Member for Southern Metropolitan Region Georgie Crozier joined tenants to officially open the Kyme Place project in Liardet Street, Port Melbourne.


The development provides social housing for lower-income single people with significant links to the Port Melbourne community.


“This is an exciting development, which sees social housing being built over an existing street level carpark, owned by the City of Port Phillip,” Ms Lovell said.


“The project is a joint venture between the Victorian Government and Port Phillip Housing Association, in partnership with the City of Port Phillip Council.


“The Council has transferred the ‘air rights’ – the right to build over the carpark – to the Port Phillip Housing Association, while retaining ownership and management of the carpark.


“The Kyme Place project shows how ‘air rights’ over open carparks can be better used. This concept has already been shown to work with the Port Phillip Housing Association’s award winning Woodstock Rooming House project in Balaclava,” Ms Lovell said.


The 27-unit, three-storey Port Melbourne development consists of 22 studio apartments and five one-bedroom apartments. It includes two units that are fully accessible for people with a disability, while a further 11 apartments can be easily adapted for disability support.


The total cost of the project was $9 million, with $6 million coming from the Victorian Government, $750,000 from Port Phillip Housing Association, and the remainder from the City of Port Phillip.


Ms Crozier said the project, which was completed last month, is owned and managed by Port Phillip Housing Association.


“This development is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when the state government, local government and a housing association work together to provide a win for local residents,” Ms Crozier said.
