The Liberal Nationals will provide much needed public housing, while protecting the residential amenity, in a new plan for the redevelopment of Markham Estate, commencing with genuine community consultation.The Andrews Labor Government has completely lost control of population growth in our suburbs and is desperately trying to push through an inappropriate high-density development on the Markham site, which has twice been blocked by the Parliament.
Labor's plans for Markham would not only sacrifice public housing and neighbourhood character; they would cause more congestion on local roads that are already choking.The Labor Government has shown a complete lack of interest in the Ashburton community by ignoring their concerns and sidelining the Boroondara Council in the planning process.
Melbourne can't keep growing the way it currently is, our city needs to have the right growth in the right places, and not a one size fits all free for all.As Liberal Planning Minister, Matthew Guy implemented a 9m discretionary height limit on the Markham site, in order to avoid another over-crowded high-rise development.
The Liberal Nationals new plan for Markham will provide low-rise public housing, in keeping with the surrounding Neighbourhood Residential Zone.
Importantly, the Liberal Nationals will restore the Boroondara Council as the Responsible Authority in the redevelopment of this site, believing that the local council is best suited to act in the interests of residents.
We will reverse the damaging aspects of Labor's changes, specifically:
These changes are so important to protect our quality of life that an elected Liberal Nationals Government will introduce them in its first 100 days.
