Works to remove the Murrumbeena Road level crossing at Murrumbeena has moved one step closer with VicRoads awarding the contract to prepare the designs and develop options to Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said the Murrumbeena Road level crossing removal forms part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s $418.6 million Metro Level Crossing Blitz.

“Congratulations to Parsons Brinckerhoff for the $794,000.00 contract to start planning for the Murrumbeena Level Crossing Removal Project,” Mr Mulder said.

“The $52.3 million funding boost for the Metro Level Crossing Blitz is enabling VicRoads to continue planning and pre-construction works to remove seven of Melbourne’s most dangerous level crossings, including Murrumbeena Road.

“This section of Murrumbeena Road carries approximately 16,400 vehicles and 243 trains every day. During the peak times the boom gates are down for up to 40 per cent of the peak hour, causing traffic delays.

“Over the next six months, VicRoads will be working closely with the City of Glen Eira and key stakeholders to develop design options for the level crossing removal.”

Member for Southern Metropolitan region Georgie Crozier joined Mr Mulder in making this announcement.

“Feedback from the local community is an important part of the process in this design development stage,” Ms Crozier said.

“Residents, businesses, road and public transport users will be invited to discuss the project with VicRoads and to provide input into the project options in the New Year.”

After this development stage is completed a business case incorporating all planning and investigation work will be submitted to the Victorian Government for funding consideration.
