New citizens join in Australia Day celebrations in Albert Park
Written on the 26 January 2014
The City of Port Phillip welcomed more than 80 new citizens with a special Australia Day ceremony in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens.
This year marks the 65th year of Australian citizenship created by the Nationality and Citizenship Act which came into effect on 26 January 1949.
I joined Minister for Health, David Davis; Member for Caulfield, David Southwick and local councillors as part of the celebrations.
Conferees in Port Phillip came from 28 different birth countries and were among the record breaking 17, 863 people in Australia who become citizens on the day.
The occasion provided new and existing citizens with an opportunity to celebrate what unites us as a nation and to reflect on the privileges and responsibilities of Australian citizenship.
