I congratulate the 135 staff who have been employed at the new David Jones store at Malvern Central shopping centre this week.
Retail is pivotal to our city’s economy and its prosperity. The Victorian Coalition Government is strongly committed to the retail sector, which makes a massive contribution to the State, directly employing more than 300,000 people and turning over almost $65 billion last financial year. The Department of State Development, Business and Innovation assisted David Jones in selecting Malvern Central shopping centre as the location for a new David Jones store.
I joined Federal Member for Higgins, Kelly O’Dwyer; the RH Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle; David Jones CEO, Paul Zahra and; Stonnington Mayor, Mathew Koce at the official opening on Thursday morning. It has been 175 years since the first David Jones store opened in Australia and David Jones' first store in Melbourne was established in 1982 when the Bourke Street Mall was developed. At about the same time, 35 shops, two warehouses and a laundry were demolished to build the Malvern Central shopping centre. This new store supports the traditional ‘village’ format and will make a major contribution to the vitality and viability of the Wattletree and Glenferrie Road shopping precinct. David Jones brings ongoing employment opportunities and retail diversity to the municipality.
The Victorian Coalition Government is delighted that David Jones is continuing to expand its presence in Melbourne and it demonstrates an increasing commitment by David Jones to the retail industry in Melbourne.Pic: Store ambassador and model, Megan Gale with guests and shoppers at Malvern Central's official opening of its David Jones store.
