New facilities at Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre (1.10.2013)

New facilities at the Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre (MAPrc) were officially opened by Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia – and also MAPrc patron since 2010.

I represented the Minister for Mental Health, Mary Wooldridge MP and joined Kelly O’Dwyer MP at the new facilities where we were able to meet lead researchers and speak to them about the innovative work they are doing.

MAPrc is a joint initiative between the Monash University Central Clinical School and The Alfred Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry. MAPrc co-ordinates and facilitates all research activities undertaken by the Department of Psychiatry. MAPrc includes a multi-disciplinary team of more than a hundred staff and post-graduate students from medicing, nursing, psychology, allied health, science and health information services.

MAPrc conducts a broad range of research in relation to mental health in areas such as women’s mental health, psychiatric neurotechnology, psychopharmacology and psychiatric service research.

More than a third of people afflicted by mental illness do not respond to conventional treatments. MAPrc is committed to developing new, innovative and effective new treatments for mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia.
Its mission is to carry out world-class psychiatry research with respect, equality and understanding.
