Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness Centre Opening (20.9.2013)
Written on the 20 September 2013
The result of ten years of focus and hard work saw the opening this morning of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg.
The Centre is the result of collaboration between scientists and clinicians who are leading the way in their approach to cancer research - that is then translated into better treatment and care.
Even in recent times we’re seeing significant improvements in five year survival rates and that’s because of all the work that’s been done in research, in early diagnosis and in the development of better treatments.
The Centre integrates comprehensive cancer treatment with a focus on wellness – on evidence based complementary therapies and programs. The commitment to wellness ensures that patients have the best support possible at all times during their cancer journey. The Centre supports patients physically, emotionally and socially to help them achieve their best possible state of wellness and it provides better support for families and friends.
I joined Olivia Newton John; the Premier, Denis Napthine; the Minister for Health, David Davis; Parliamentary Services Minister, Kevin Andrews MP; parliamentary colleagues; board members and research leaders, health workers and patients.
This project was led by Olivia Newton John, and I congratulate her and all those people who have driven the idea and the concept; those who help fund it and; those people who work here. We can be very proud of what we now have here in Victoria at the Austin Hospital.
We are working towards a cancer free world – and this new centre encapsulates the future of cancer treatment because it is about a holistic approach.
