Sentencing reform (21.9.2017)

Reports a man who married a 14-year-old child bride in a secret Islamic ceremony has received a minimum sentence of 12 months shows the sentencing system needs urgent review.

The scale of the seriousness of this abuse and the potential lifelong impacts to the victim should not be trivialised with such an offensively inadequate sentence.

We have had Royal Commissions into Family Violence and Child Sexual Abuse and yet there doesn't seem to be any urgency to eliminate this horrific scourge.

The time for talking is over.

Daniel Andrews needs to reform the sentencing system now.
