Sexual and Reproductive Health Plan for Melbourne's West (2.10.2013)

While Victorians are statistically among the healthiest people in the world, diseases associated with sexual and reproductive ill health continues to rise. The need for action that responds to and ultimately prevents sexual and reproductive ill health before it occurs has been urgently needed in Melbourne’s western regions - which has higher morbidity rates than the Victorian average.

As a result, this week the Victoiran Coalition government joined with Women's Health West to celebrate the launch of Action for Equity – a Sexual and Reproductive Health Plan for Melbourne’s West 2013-2017.

Funded by the Department of Health through the Victorian Women's Health Program (VWHP) and the Family and Reproductive Rights Education program, Action for Equity is a four year sexual and reproductive health promotion plan for Melbourne’s west. It incorporates prevention initiatives that have been proven to work and long term strategies to generate social and cultural change.

Led by Women’s Health West and a group of agencies committed to the development of evidence-based initiatives to improve sexual and reproductive health, the Plan provides a vision where everyone has the right to a healthy, respectful relationship and a pleasurable sex life with a partner of their choice; the ability to control their body and to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health free from violence and discrimination and; the freedom to express their sexuality.

I congratulate community health organisations, all the women’s health and community organisations involved, state and local government agencies and most importantly, Professor Anne Mitchell from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society for her invaluable support for this project.
