South Road temporary public housing (15.06.2018)

Instead of providing proper, permanent, quality public housing in an area close to necessary services, the Andrews Labor Government has rushed out temporary structures like the facility in South Road in Brighton East.

The five residents and one supervisor are housed in portable, modular units. The specialist services that the residents at this site require are not located nearby and are difficult to access easily by public transport from the site.

The use of the site for temporary, portable units was undertaken without proper planning or consultation with the community. Additionally, the contracts that Labor signed to establish this site have been hidden from the public.

A Liberal Nationals government will find permanent accommodation for these residents to ensure that the services they need are close at hand.

Following them finding a home, the site will be sold.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Housing, Georgie Crozier:

"If Martin Foley was doing his job properly and really listening to public housing tenants and local communities, then this project would not have gone ahead.

"James Newbury has been listening to his local community and working with Matthew Guy's team to find a solution."

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Brighton, James Newbury:

"Hundreds of local residents around the local area have expressed their concerns to me since these temporary structures were put up.

"I have listened to the concerns of the local community and fought for a more permanent solution.

"The proceeds of the sale of this land would be better reinvested into permanent housing it would build far more than 6 modular units - which would go some way towards increasing permanent accommodation available for the 82,000 people on the public housing waiting list."
