Time for Labor solutions not politics on early childhood services (27.05.2015)

Background
Following the release of the VAGO report on Early Intervention Services for Vulnerable Children and Families, the Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos chose to focus on political point-scoring instead of getting on with the jobs of delivering solutions.

The facts are:

  • In 2014 the Coalition provided a total of $433 million in funding for vulnerable children and families, including $198.4 million in the Victorian Budget 2014-15 for support services, which included a $30 million boost to combating family violence; an extra $55 million in reforms for children in out-of-home care; and an additional $150 million action package to address reducing family violence
  • In 2013 the Coalition provided $218 million in funding for child protection, education and early childhood development support and other services for vulnerable children and families
  • In 2012 the Coalition provided $336 million in funding for additional frontline workers, improved intervention and diversion programs, Children's Court reforms and other services for vulnerable children and families
  • In 2011 the Coalition provided $98 million for frontline child protection workers and investing in early intervention and support for young people in residential care; and $17.5 million to strengthen the youth justice system, creating pathways into prevention and rehabilitation and addressing vulnerable youths and intergenerational crime.

Labor has cut tens of millions of dollars from programs to address reducing family violence in the 2015-16 Budget.  See page 11 of Labor's Financial Statement 2014 as clear evidence of that.

Comments attributable to Georgie Crozier, Shadow Minister for Families and Children and Shadow Minister for Prevention of Family Violence

"This is more hypocrisy from Daniel Andrews who slashed tens of millions of dollars from children and family violence programs upon coming to government.

"The Coalition delivered $1 billion in funding for children and family services.  Labor's response is negative and distracts from the real issues.

"It's time Daniel Andrews got on with improving family services instead of engaging in misleading and cheap political point-scoring.
