World Diabetes Congress

The 2013 World Diabetes Congress was held in Melbourne from 2 - 6 December.

It was the largest health conference ever held in Australia and it brought together 10,500 delegates from more than 100 countries. Throughout the course of the Congress I chaired a number of sessions including ‘Tackling Obesity’ and ‘Diabetes and Pregnancy.’

The Congress was an outstanding success on a number of levels.

Delegates included scientists, researchers, physicians, diabetes educators, nurses, advocates as well as a number of visiting international parliamentarians. All came together to share their experiences and knowledge to further understand how we can best manage and treat the rising incidence of this insidious disease.

The increasing rates pose significant challenges for governments of all levels. In Australia there are 100,000 people who develop diabetes every year.

Prevention is one key initiative to address the rising incidence of diabetes.

Healthy Together Victoria commenced just over 12 months ago and is already having a positive impact in 12 local government areas across Victoria.
